“Gillie!” Georgie cried. He then hopped down from his seat and raced up the aisle.

Mary Poppins and Jack were still taking their bows. As the twins continued to clap, Annabel caught sight of the empty seat next to her. “Where’s Georgie?” she asked John. She and John looked around and saw Georgie just as he was slipping through a tent flap at the side of the Music Hall.

Annabel grabbed John’s hand. “Come on!” she shouted. They made their way down the row and hurried after their brother.

Outside the tent, Georgie had spotted the wolf, along with the badger and the weasel. The animals were loading up the back of a wagon with various items—which Georgie instantly recognized. They were all things from the Bankses’ nursery! Toys, clothes—even the chairs and beds.

Georgie ran over to them. “What are you doing?” he demanded.

The wolf peered down at Georgie. “Well, well. If it isn’t the boy who cracked the bowl.” The wolf smiled coldly. “We’ve waited a long time for you Banks children to come and visit us—so we could pay a visit to your nursery.”

“Those are our things!” Georgie said, pointing to the items in the wagon.

“Not anymore, they aren’t,” the wolf replied. He spun the crank at the front of the wagon, starting up the steam engine that powered the vehicle.

Georgie noticed Gillie inside the wagon and reached out to grab him. The badger tried to snatch the giraffe out of Georgie’s hands, but Georgie wouldn’t let go. “He’s mine!” Georgie cried. “My mother made him for me!” The badger finally gave up trying to retrieve the giraffe, and he and the weasel picked up Georgie and tossed him into the wagon.

John and Annabel had exited the tent and spotted Georgie. “Leave our brother alone!” Annabel yelled.

“Time to go, boys!” the wolf shouted from the driver’s seat. As the twins raced toward the wagon, the badger and the weasel leapt into the front with the wolf, and the wagon took off. Annabel and John chased after it but fell quickly behind as the wagon’s engine exhaust engulfed them in a smoky cloud.

Georgie gripped the wooden slats of the wagon. “Let me go!” he screamed. “I want to go home!”

“What home?” the wolf yelled back. “You’ve lost your home!”

The wagon was going too fast for Annabel and John to keep up, and the vehicle soon vanished into the darkness ahead. The lights of the Music Hall were far behind them now, and the trees hid the moon and the stars. As the twins leaned over to catch their breath, they heard a clip-clop on the cobblestones behind them. A carriage appeared, and in the driver’s seat sat a tall Irish setter in a coachman’s uniform.

“Shamus!” Annabel cried.

The carriage stopped next to the twins. John and Annabel quickly climbed in, and Clyde took off. “Let’s go get your brother back!” the horse shouted as he galloped down the path.

The carriage raced over the cobblestones, following the road as it curved up and down the sides of the porcelain bowl.
